Patch 12.1 · Curse of Ula'tek

WoW Midnight Season 2 sims

Patch 12.1 lands on 11 August 2026 and Season 2 opens on 18 August 2026. Here is what changes for gearing, and what to sim first once you are in.

The two dates that matter

The patch and the season are a week apart, and they change different things. 11 August 2026 brings the class tuning, the Coiled Isle, and Altar of Fangs at Heroic and Mythic 0. Your rotation and talent choices change that day, so that is when a fresh sim of your current character is worth running.

18 August 2026 is when gearing resets: The Venomous Abyss opens, ranked Mythic+ starts on the new pool, and Mistcrests replace Dawncrests. That is when loot sims become worth running again, because until then there is no Season 2 loot to win.

What you can sim right now

The loot catalog is already on Season 2, so Altar of Fangs and the rest of the Season 2 Mythic+ pool are simmable today. Altar of Fangs is the one genuinely new dungeon in patch 12.1 and it is open at Heroic and Mythic 0 from patch day, dropping around item level 292.

The Tidebound Grottois simmable too. It is 12.1's Lair, a single-boss instance (Nymrissa Wavecaller) that replaces open world bosses, counts for the raid row of your Great Vault, and drops at the same item levels as the main raid. Its World difficulty is already open.

The Venomous Abyss is in there too. The raid does not open until 18 August 2026, but its loot table shipped with the patch, so you can droptimize it now and know which bosses are worth your first lockout before the doors even open.

Season 2 item levels

Season 2 lifts the ceiling by roughly 45 item levels over Season 1. Each raid difficulty drops at the first rank of its track, so a Heroic piece and a fully upgraded Normal piece are much closer than the difficulty names suggest. That is exactly the comparison a droptimizer settles for you.

Item level at each upgrade rank. Every rank costs Mistcrests of the matching track.

These are the values MythicSim simulates against. If Blizzard retunes them at season open, the sim and this table move together.

The Venomous Abyss

Eight bosses on the Coiled Isle, ending on Ula'tek. Five of them drop a set token for one fixed slot. Ula'tek drops the Slumbering Coil Curio, which you redeem for whichever set slot you choose, so its real value is the best of the five rather than an average.

What to sim first

  1. On patch day, re-sim your current character. Class tuning changes your baseline, and the talent build that was best in Season 1 often is not after a tuning pass.
  2. Check your stat priority again. Secondary stat weights move with tuning and with new set bonuses. Stat priority by spec.
  3. Once the season opens, droptimize before you raid. Simming the loot table tells you which bosses are worth your lockout rather than guessing from item level.
  4. Re-check trinkets and enchants. A whole new trinket pool lands with the raid. Best trinkets by spec and best enchants by spec.

How current are the sims?

Every sim runs on SimulationCraft, which is a volunteer project that updates its class modules after a patch rather than before it. In the first days of 12.1 some specs will be more settled than others. MythicSim shows the exact SimulationCraft build and game version it is running in the header, so you can always tell whether a result predates a fix you were waiting on.

The practical advice for the first week of a season: trust sims for comparisons within your own character, like which of two trinkets to wear, and be sceptical of cross-spec comparisons until the class modules settle.

Common questions

When does WoW Midnight Season 2 start?

Patch 12.1, Curse of Ula'tek, goes live on 11 August 2026 with the class changes, the Coiled Isle zone, and Altar of Fangs at Heroic and Mythic 0. Season 2 itself opens a week later on 18 August 2026, when The Venomous Abyss, ranked Mythic+, the PvP season, and Bountiful Delves unlock.

What item level is Mythic raid gear in Season 2?

Mythic drops from The Venomous Abyss start at item level 318 (Myth 1/6) and upgrade to 334 at 6/6 with Myth Mistcrests. Heroic starts at 305, Normal at 292, and Raid Finder at 279.

Can I sim Season 2 gear before the season starts?

You can sim your current character at any time, and the Season 2 loot tables switch on when the season opens. Sim results are only as current as the simulation engine's class data, so numbers in the first days after a patch move as SimulationCraft lands its post-patch fixes.

Do Season 1 Voidcores carry into Season 2?

No. Season 1 Ascendant Voidcores convert to gold at the rollover. Season 2 uses Ascendant Venomstones instead, which apply to weapons, trinkets and necks rather than just weapons and trinkets.

What is The Tidebound Grotto?

It is patch 12.1's Lair: a single-boss instance (Nymrissa Wavecaller) that replaces open-world bosses. It counts toward the raid row of the Great Vault and its loot drops at the same item levels as The Venomous Abyss, so Normal is 292, Heroic 305 and Mythic 318. There are no tier set tokens in it.

Which Mythic+ dungeons are in Season 2?

The Season 2 pool is Altar of Fangs, Murder Row, Den of Nalorakk, The Blinding Vale, Voidscar Arena, Ruby Life Pools, Kings' Rest, Temple of Sethraliss. The entire Season 1 rotation drops out.
